AhlulBayt News Agency: An Iranian Quran reciter praised Egypt’s legendary qaris, such as Mustafa Ismail and Mohamed Rifaat, for their lasting influence. He attributed their impact to a deep connection with the Quran’s meaning rather than just vocal skill.
Ali Asghar Ghadiri Mofrad stated in an interview with IQNA that past Egyptian reciters focused on conveying the meaning and message of the verses, touching the hearts and souls of listeners.
He emphasized the saying, “Words that come from the heart will surely settle in the heart,” highlighting the emotional depth of their recitations.
Mofrad compared the approach of past qaris with some contemporary reciters, noting that many today prioritize technical performance over spiritual depth. He stressed that true Quranic recitation requires engagement with its meanings.
He referenced the guidance of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has consistently emphasized the importance of understanding Quranic verses for effective recitation.
According to Mofrad, Ayatollah Khamenei considers comprehension of the verses a fundamental pillar of genuine Quranic recitation. A reciter must grasp the themes, be moved by them, and only then can they move others.
He quoted Ayatollah Khamenei, stating that a qari must first believe in the Quran and its concepts.
“If we do not understand what we are reading, if we do not grasp its meaning, and if it does not touch our soul, our recitation will have little impact on others or ourselves,” he explained.
While acknowledging the importance of vocal techniques, Mofrad warned against excessive musicality in Quranic recitation.
He stressed that the tone and melodies used must align with the Quran’s spiritual essence.
Mofrad cited Ayatollah Khamenei’s distinction between Quranic recitation and singing, stating that Quran recitation should not be confused with musical performance.
He noted that many of Egypt’s past Quran masters, including Ismail and Rifaat, were trained musicians but adhered to spiritually appropriate melodies.
“They were meticulous in ensuring their recitation aligned with the Quran’s meaning,” he concluded.
